Know when to replace your pillow

Look at the outer part of the pillow and check if there are dead skin cell build ups or if there are dust mites living in your pillow. This signifies that a replacement pillow is a must. You can also try other checks such as folding your pillow in half and placing an object (heavy enough to press it down a little – say a book)on top, if it stays folded in half, then you should consider replacing it.

The way you sleep impacts the firmness of your pillow

Knowing this prevents you from having neck pain or sometimes, back pain and will you keep sound asleep the entire night. As a general rule, if you switch positions throughout the night, be sure to go for medium-density pillows. If you’re more of a Back Sleeper than a Stomach Sleeper, opt for a softer pillow. For Stomach Sleepers, a soft, thinner pillow should suffice. This will help keep their neck in neutral position.

As for Side Sleepers, we highly recommend a thick and firm pillow to keep their ears in line with their shoulders. This will prevent neck pains in the future.

The fill type

There is a wide assortment of fill types from down and feathers to hypoallergenic materials, while some are entirely machine washable while the other styles only comes with machine washable covers, etc. It is important to always check the label to avoid regrets after the purchase. Below are few fill types for your consideration:

Down Pillows are lofty, lightweight or rather the fluffiest. They are breathable and it confirms wonderfully to your head and neck. However, down/feather mix pillows are more firmer.

Down Alternatives these are usually made of synthetic fill are even more affordable than down/feather mix pillow. It is a good alternative if you are allergic to down.

Hypoallergenic Pillows are made from materials that block out mites, pollen and even pet dander. If you suffer from allergies, we highly recommend you opt for this fill.

Memory foam pillows is a dense, sponge-like material and are available in two different styles: solid or shredded. Both gives a supportive feel however, a solid memory foam’s fill cannot move while the latter can and will deliver a plusher feel.

What are dust mites?

Dust mites are one of the most highly contaminants found indoors. They are tiny organisms with eight legs, distantly related to spiders. Often heavily contaminated with the decal pellets. They can also be a factor that causes asthma, eczema, hay fever and other allergic ailments.

Dust mites prefers areas that are warm and humid, and moist surroundings such as the inside of a mattress. Some people are allergic to dust mites decayed bodies and decal material, which can become components of airborne household dust.

How to prevent dust mites?

To prevent dust mites from inhabiting your bed, we recommend that you use cotton encasement with high thread counts (200 or more per inch) to prevent dust mites from crawling in and out of pillow and mattresses’ interior. Fabrics may also be treated with anti-mite, anti-bacterial components to stop effects of dust mites. Wash encasement and your pillow case in hot water (130°F) at lease once a week. Avoid getting into bed with wet hair because moist hair and bedding attracts dust mites.
